Why Final Cut Server?
There are a lot of options out there for Digital Asset Management these days and this biggest question on many peoples minds is Which DAM is right for us? Having worked with most of the major systems out there today including Artesia, North Plains, CatDV, and many others, we have become very focused on Final Cut Server as the core asset management system of choice for any company that not only has to organize their assets, but is also in the business of creating, modifying, and distributing those assets. Here are two key reasons why.
The Final Cut Pro Project
The first and biggest reason why companies are choosing Final Cut Server to manage their digital assets is the ability that Final Cut Server gives the end user to see, track, and automate based on whats inside of a Final Cut Pro Project file.
(no other system in the world is able to parse (look inside) a Final Cut Pro project file and track the contents of that file. Many other systems may make simila claims (like CatDV), but in reality they are simply using the Final Cut Pro API which allows them to see which clips are being used ONLY while a Final Cut Pro Project is open. With Final Cut Server, all projects added to the system are instantly parsed and all of the metadata from inside of that roject becomes available for searching and modification.
Level of Customization
Amongst all of the fantastic creative and organizational tools that come standard with Final Cut Server, the most impressive is the option to run external scripts based on any standard trigger in the program. (Basically this means when anyone presses a button or chooses a drop-down choice, or fills in a blank, we can get all of the information about that asset or group of assets and use it however we want with no restrictions).
While most Digital Asset Management systems have some level of customization, None that we have compared have anything near the level of depth as what we have seen in Final Cut Server. The ability to literally go as far as not even having to use the Final Cut Server interface at all and be able to build a completely custom interface with exactly the layout and functionality that you want with only a $1000 cost point on the base software is something we've never seen in any competing products. With this cost model the rest of your digital asset management budget can be spent on specific customization to build a unique solution designed to fit exactly how you need it to in your organization.
